Description

The Charlevoix Lighthouse “I” Like it White! Note Cards. This image is a reproduction of a painting I did of the iconic Charlevoix, Lighthouse on the Pine River Channel between Lake Michigan and Round Lake, connecting Lake Michigan to Lake Charlevoix… before they painted it red. It was white when I came to Charlevoix and to me, it will always be white. It was hard for me to accept when they painted it red. It didn’t fit into my “painter’s eye”. “What happened to my comfortable friend that had always been on the horizon and that I had painted from every angle for years?” The State of MI decommissioned the lighthouse and rather than tearing it down, they turned over the upkeep of the lighthouse to City of Charlevoix. When time came to do necessary maintenance, The Charlevoix Historical Society did the research, applied for grants, did fundraisers and restored the lighthouse to the red it was back in the 40’s or 50’s… before I came to town. It is an on going local discussion… the argument if you like it better red or if you like it better white was a hot topic at the local coffee shops. Of course it depends on when you grew up in Charlevoix or when you vacationed here or when Charlevoix holds a special memory for you that it makes a difference… or not. I still paint it white on occasion and title the painting: The Charlevoix Lighthouse “I” Like it White! Maybe I’m a rebel or wistfully remember my youth. Whichever way you like the lighthouse… Charlevoix is beautiful.
