Earl Young’s Famous “Half House” – Magnet

Earl Young’s Famous “Half House”. This magnet measures 2 inches by 3.5 inches. The image is a reproduction of a painting of one of Charlevoix’s well known attractions, the famous Mushroom House, an Earl Young creation. Earl lived in Charlevoix from the time he was eleven until he died in 1975. He built 28 homes and commercial buildings out of stone. They are also called “Knome homes” or “Hobbit Houses”. He built them so that they are “one with nature” and they seem to “flow” with the landscape or grow right up out of the earth. He did very little excavating and little to no tree removal. He built the homes to “fit” the area. The Half House is one of the most famous and most recognizable of his home designs. It was built for his daughter, Virginia, as a wedding present. I did this painting as a study for a scene I did on “Charle-fish” for the Great Northern Fish-In sponsored by the North West Michigan Red Cross as a fundraiser. It is acrylic on fiberglass.
