Description
Parkside Restaurant of Charlevoix Magnet. This magnet measures 2 inches by 3.5 inches. This image is a reproduction of a painting of the Parkside Restaurant in Charlevoix Michigan overlooking Round Lake. The Parkside was owned and operated by Leo and Gladys Markel until the early 1980’s when they retired, selling the building. The city acquired the building tearing it down to build the expanded East Park and marina in 2008. The Parkside was a staple for summer people and locals alike. Broiled whitefish, banana nut bread and lemon poppyseed muffins were favorites. You knew it was the end of the summer when Gladys put the sign in the window saying “See You In Spring”.
I have painted this restaurant a number of times. In 2004 it was featured on a large outdoor fiberglass fish. “Charle-Fish” had 17 scenes of Charlevoix. It was part of the “Great Northern Fish In”, a Fundraiser for the Red Cross of Northern Michigan. “Dining in Charlevoix” where the table featured a scene of the lighthouse and the four chairs each with different restaurants in Charlevoix, one of which was the Parkside. And it was recently included in one of a series of large tables that I did for the restaurant East Park Tavern for their upper deck. I fondly remember the restaurant not only for the food but for the character it brought the community. It was the end of an era.
