The Story Behind the Art
I painted this painting of our beloved lighthouse after a creative slump. I had not painted in at least a month. No painting found objects with decorative designs… I hadn’t pick up a brush in forever! And certainly not for an actual “painting” painting (painting OF something) in much longer. I had done some abstract paintings but I don’t think that is in the same part of your right brain as figure and landscape painting!
My son Ryder had gifted me the book Daily Painting by Carol Marine for Christmas. Just what I needed… Very inspirational! I, of course, knew all the painting techniques that were covered but to read her positive words about what to paint, to paint small, and every day really hit home. Sometimes artists get stuck in a rut and then they get the equivalent to what is call writer’s block. Another thing she said was to paint something I was familiar with! Well, I thought, my good friend the lighthouse! As soon as I decided on my subject and pulled out my references, the sun came out. And “A Sunny Afternoon in Charlevoix” was created!
