The Story Behind the Art

This image is a reproduction of  “Pollock in Deep Blue”. This is a totally unique piece that was made as a by product of another piece of “functional art” that I made.

This is a section of my SIDEWALK believe it or not! Yes, my sidewalk is painted Jackson Pollock style! The cement on our sidewalk was from different pours so it was actually different shades. As a young couple, we were on a budget and Jim’s brother was a contractor. When we were building our house, to save money, Bo would bring us the left over cement from a job he was working on. It was great! Saved us money but didn’t look “so good”. As we got older, we tried to figure out creative ways to make the sidewalk look better. A stone overlay wouldn’t work in Northern Michigan because of the freezing and thawing. They pop off or crack. Well, as I have said before, paint fixes everything! Jim actually came up with the idea. He is wonderful like that, he indulges me in my artwork and creativity by encouraging new projects.

Prepping for a Project

We had the idea and the ambition so now for the research. I research each of my projects to make sure things go reasonably smooth. Especially if it is something I don’t normally do. We looked up what kind of paint to use and the finish… easy. Dribble paint like Jackson Pollock. Couldn’t be that hard, I studied him in college. Well, first I looked up some of his paintings in books I had so I could get a feel for what colors to use and basic look (he had several different dribble painting looks). I practiced on some cardboard. Hmm, didn’t look like the paintings. I tried some more. Still a no. It couldn’t be that hard, he just dribbled the paint right? Threw the paint off the end of the paint brush at times so the splats added effects. Thick and thin lines should be flowing onto my white sidewalk background that was supposed to simulate a canvas. But it looked like a large birthday cake with sprinkles! Nothing connected. There was no cohesiveness. No flow, no movement.

Painting Like Pollock

Back to the drawing board. I decided I needed to study the man too. I watched a ton of videos of him in his studio. Working. Sometimes painting, sometimes prepping. I watched how he painted, how he moved. He painted with his whole body! Fascinating! You could see him stop and think and study his canvas then go off and paint but moving and swaying, “willing” the paint to go in the direction he wanted it! Things looked random but weren’t. Since this was going on my sidewalk, I had the whole winter to prepare.

Spring: I practiced again with much better results. Summer: warmer, time to paint!

It turned out wonderfully! Everyone that comes to my house/studio comments on it. Very unique. Totally worth the time and effort.
