The Story Behind the Art
My husband Jim is a retired rural postal carrier. Each year, when he still working and had his route, he received many gifts from his clients for the Holidays. The gifts ranged from a small monetary token, baked goods, and candy, to many very useful items such as warm socks or a hand embroidered down throw! He was always so appreciative of the gifts. He always was careful to note “who” gave the gift and what it was, so he could write them a personal thank you note the next day.
Some of these gifts were so outstanding and ALL were thoughtful. People showed how much they appreciated his hard work that year. I wanted to be sure he was able to thank them and give something in return. I came up with hand painting a Christmas card for each one to let them know how much he appreciated their generosity! Jim was very fast and organized on his route, so he was very popular. A large portion of his clients gave gifts.
The card idea was great, but that was a lot of painting! I managed to break each design down into easily managed steps. I would think months ahead of time, for the “theme” for his cards. Looking at all things Christmas such as books, movies, and catalogs (this was before the internet!) for ideas.
Somehow, I didn’t think to scan or keep any kind of record of what I had done during the first number of years. One year I accidentally painted a repeat design of something similar, since they were all hand done and “originals”! I couldn’t do that! “Each year” had to be unique! They were kind enough to give gifts (most of which I enjoyed too), they deserved a true original card. I started scanning them in for a digital record.
Some years later, I started getting note cards printed of my “other art. One year, I was asked to be in a couple of Christmas art and craft shows. It was natural to start getting my Christmas designs done too. I still continued to do the originals for Jim’s special clients until his retirement in 2018. I am still approached in the grocery, and other local places, with people commenting on how much they enjoyed getting the cards. Several said they collected them every year! It made me feel so good.
Angel Playing Lute Christmas Card was designed from my researching Angels. When sourcing references and ideas, I found multiple things they could be doing. I found several. I’m glad I took notes, I didn’t have to think for a few years!
